Hello everyone, this is Mr. Donovan. As many of you already know, our new track and football field are officially complete! I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to every community member who supported this project. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and commitment in helping us make this vision a reality. I also wanted to share an exciting update for this spring: the project bids came in lower than expected, which allows us to move forward with additional improvements. We’re planning to add a concession stand with restrooms, bleachers, and a press box using the remaining funds. None of this would be possible without your continued support. Please feel free to come out and enjoy the new track—just remember to stay off the newly seeded field while it takes root! Thank you again for everything you do for our school and community.

October Student of the Month – Character
This month we celebrate a student who demonstrates what it means to live with strong character every day. They lead by example through honesty, kindness, and respect for others, both in and out of the classroom. Their peers and teachers can count on them to make responsible choices, support others, and act with integrity. Whether it’s through academics, activities, or simple daily interactions, this student consistently shows that true character is not about recognition but about doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

The Asphalt Paving and Materials crew wrapped up their work yesterday! Even better, the team included six folks from Wolsey and three graduates. It’s always special to see a hometown crew helping improve our facilities—what a great way to invest in both our community and our future!

As many of you know, several South Dakota newspapers—including the Huron Plainsman—suddenly closed on August 6, 2025. This created a gap in local news coverage, and it was important to make sure our school and community voices continue to be heard.

That’s why the Town of Wolsey, the Wolsey-Wessington School District, and the Wolsey Fire Protection District have chosen the True Dakotan as their official legal paper of record. This move expands the True Dakotan’s coverage north to Wolsey, helping ensure our families, students, and residents have a reliable source for news and updates that matter most to us.

The Plainsman has since announced that it will resume a printed edition on Wednesdays, but with fewer print days and a reorganized structure. In the meantime, the True Dakotan has stepped forward to serve Wolsey with coverage and publishing services for the town, school, and fire district.

“We’re honored to step in and serve Wolsey at a time when communities need trusted local news. Local journalism matters, and we’re here to keep residents informed and connected,” said True Dakotan Editor and Publisher Kristi Hine.

She also pointed out the strong connection between Wolsey-Wessington and Wessington Springs: “Wessington Springs and Wolsey-Wessington School Districts already co-op in wrestling, and with Wolsey just 30 miles from Springs and 20 miles from Alpena, the close proximity lends to making it a natural extension of the True Dakotan coverage area.”

Hine also emphasized the importance of local ownership and independence. “Our readers and communities can count on us to continue reporting with a hyper-local focus and integrity,” she said.

For our school district, this partnership means that our student achievements, school activities, and community events will continue to have a platform that reaches families both here in Wolsey and across the broader region.

Those who wish to subscribe can do so by visiting www.truedakotan.com, calling 605-539-1281, or emailing kristi@truedakotan.com.

The True Dakotan office remains on Main Street in Wessington Springs, and their team welcomes visitors and story ideas from our community as coverage expands to include Wolsey.

Hello everyone this is Mr. Donovan. First off, what a great showing at the open house! We are so excited to get everyone back in the building.
A few things I wanted to talk about:
This year we are still going to have a huge focus on family engagement. Our goal is to partner with you to support your child’s success, both in and out of the classroom. From school events and volunteer opportunities to open communication and shared decision-making, we’re here to listen, collaborate, and celebrate student success.
Parking will look a little different this year in the parking lot west of the main gym. Half of it will be completely blocked off due to equipment for the new track. Please use the north side and main parking lot for the time being. Pick up and drop off at the front will look the same this year. If you do plan on coming into the school, please be sure not to park at the front door and use the main parking lot.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please reach out!! Again, we are extremely excited for a great school year!
